FAQs

General

Where can I find information about crossing the US/Canada border? Please refer to the CBSA website for the most current border crossing information. In general, the process is:

  • Enter Canada via planned port of entry (typically Sprague or South Junction).
  • Upon arrival to the Northwest Angle, report to US Customs. Check in using the iPad at Jim’s Corner, the Angle Outpost Lodge, or use the CBP Roam mobile app.
  • When departing the Northwest Angle, check in with Canadian Customs to provide advance notice of your entry into Canada. Stop at Jim’s Corner and use the provided phone.
  • Cross back into the US via planned port of entry.

Can I drive to the northernmost point of the continuous United States? No, it’s accessible by water only.

What are my dining options? All of our cabins have kitchens and outdoor grills if you prefer to cook. There is a small convenience store at the Northwest Angle, plan your grocery shopping accordingly. Jerry’s Bar & Restaurant is a few miles down the road from the resort and there are several island restaurants accessible via the lake.

Where can I learn more about Lake of the Woods and the Northwest Angle? Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau is a great resource for all things NWA + LOW.

How much is parking? $6/night for a vehicle and $12/night for a truck + trailer. Parking is free for Angle Outpost guests.

Open-Water Fishing

What fishing license do I need + where do I get it? If fishing in MN, purchase a license online here. If fishing in Canada, purchase a license here. If you’ve booked a guided trip, please confirm with your guide what license(s) is needed. **Note: We highly recommend purchasing your license(s) in advance. Cell and internet service can be intermittent due to our remote location.

Do I really need a guide? It’s not required, but if you’re new to the north side of Lake of the Woods, we highly recommend booking a guide for at least the first day or two to get acclimated. For more information on our guides, visit their websites, linked in the Guide page above.

When is the MN fishing season and what are the limits? Download the 2024 MN Fishing Regulations here, see page 21.

When is the Ontario fishing season and what are the limits? Download the 2024 Ontario Fishing Regulations here, see Zone 5.

How much does a guide cost? Our guides are independent contractors and set their own rates. Please refer to their website for more information.

What is the reporting process for fishing in Canada? when boating into Canada, you do not have to check in with customs unless you touch land, a dock, anchor, moor, or exchange goods or services. If you plan on doing any of these activities, call 888-CAN-PASS just ahead of your trip to check in with Canadian Customs. Upon your return to the US, you will need to check back in with US Customs as you are entering the US from a foreign country.

What are the main targeted species? Musky, Walleye, Crappie, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Perch.

Do you offer rental boats? Yes, we rent boats exclusively to our guests. Our fleet changes frequently due to maintenance. Please call to inquire about availability and rates.

Ice Fishing

What should I bring? Gallon size plastic bags, paper towels, a fillet knife, fishing gear and warm clothing. Temps can drop to -50 with windchill, so plan accordingly.

How long is the ride to the fish house?

15-25 minutes, one way.

Can I drive myself to the fish house? There are no plowed roads out to the fish houses; track vehicles are required. Guests who transport themselves via snowmobile receive a $15/day discount.

What fishing license do I need and where do I get it? You will need a MN fishing license. Purchase it here ahead of your arrival.

How big are your fish houses? Our day houses are 8 x 12 or 8 x 14. Our sleeper houses are 10 x 20.

Can I rent fishing equipment? Yes, Humminbird and Vexilars are available for $30/day.

How many people will be in a fish house? Most of our houses are 4- and 6-man houses. Your comfort is a priority, and we won’t place more people in a fish house than necessary. You may request additional houses for your party in advance (for instance, your group of 4 is divided among 2 houses) for a surcharge of $15/person/day. Please note that this is subject to availability.
